Russian expert supports Cuba in tackling drought

Drought is considered one of the main natural threats to Cuba's development, with significant impacts on the hydraulic sector. It is estimated that with the rise of average temperatures caused by climate change the conditions of water supply will worsen which will increase the risk of drought significantly and inevitably affect healthcare and agricultural production.
In December 2020 the Russian expert conducted a series of webinars to support the strengthening of the surveillance and monitoring of the hydrological cycle in Cuba as well as water supply for the population. The expert evaluated the existing water resource management facilities in Cuba in cooperation with specialists of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) and specialists of the National Meteorological Institute (INSMET) and provided proposals for improvement of the equipment that could be installed in Cuba to strengthen the hydrological monitoring network.
Cuban Specialists highly valued the work of the Russian expert, they outlined that the advisory had strategic importance, both for INRH and OSDEs as it helped to facilitate know-how transfer of specialized hydrological technology, which can significantly improve the quality of life in Cuba.
The work of the Russian expert was made possible thanks to the Knowledge Management and Capacity Building in UNDP-Russia Partnership project.
