Public buildings across Kyrgyzstan mostly have outdated lighting and coal-fired heating systems, which poses a threat to reducing pollutants’ emissions and does not help fulfill obligations under the recently ratified Paris Agreement.

The Russian expert studied the situation with public school and healthcare buildings in Bishkek and developed a set of recommendations on energy efficient solutions for lighting and heating systems. Besides, a partnership scheme for the implementation of a pilot project on energy efficiency through the modernization of public buildings was devised with energy savings of up to 50% and heating costs reduction of up to 60%.

Based on the Russian expert’s findings 16 secondary schools, 2 kindergartens and 5 healthcare facilities will be upgraded with modern lighting and heating systems, while the technological solutions for the pilot project will be replicated in other public buildings across the country.

The expert assignment is implemented under the Knowledge Management and Capacity Building in UNDP-Russia Partnership project.
