Rosstat experts advised colleagues in Turkmenistan on monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals

On January 18, 2019, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Turkmenistan, together with the Russia-UNDP Partnership Support Office, the State Committee on Statistics of Turkmenistan and the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia (Rosstat), held a seminar on approaches to monitoring indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national level. The workshop was attended by representatives of all departments and ministries of Turkmenistan responsible for collecting information on various SDG indicators. During Rosstat mission to the country, a separate meeting was also held at the State Committee on Statistics of Turkmenistan.
Rosstat presented to the Turkmen colleagues the Russian Federation’s approach to monitoring the SDGs, including coordination mechanisms at the national level, principles for generating official statistical information, distributing SDG indicators by ministries and departments, data availability by indicators, approaches to working with public and business organizations, and popularizing SDG data.
Turkmen specialists were especially interested in the creation of a database on SDG indicators, the interdepartmental distribution of SDG indicators, data disaggregation, and the participation of the business community in national reporting. On November 17, 2017, the President of Turkmenistan approved a national structure for monitoring the implementation of the SDGs in the country. Expert assistance was provided within the framework of the project “Knowledge Management and Capacity Development under the Russia-UNDP Partnership”.
