“Russian Energy Week – 2019” brought together EAEU experts on Energy Efficiency together
The panel discussion “Topical Issues Related to Advancing Energy and Resource Efficiency in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU)” was held on 4 October within the framework of the annual energy forum “Russian Energy Week-2019” and brought together representatives of sectoral agencies from Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC), the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation and UNDP, as well as expert, academic and scientific community of the EAEU countries who discussed achievements and challenges in building green economies in the Region.
Agi Veres, Deputy Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS pointed out the close connection between the topic of the panel discussion and the decisions of the recently concluded climate summit on the margins of the UN General Assembly. Regional cooperation and contribution to the development of energy efficiency are among the main areas for partnership with the Russian Federation, so UNDP will continue to expand its cooperation with Russia and EAEU countries on the implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and Agenda 2030.
The panel discussion was a key reporting event for the regional project “Regulatory Framework to Promote Energy Efficiency in Countries of the Eurasian Economic Union”. One of the project’s main achievements in 2019 has been the adoption by the EEC of the EAEU Technical Regulation "On Energy Efficiency Requirements for Energy Consuming Devices" developed in cooperation with the project experts. The regulation deals with 8 main groups of appliances and aims to ensure their energy efficiency, thus contributing to increased energy saving. In addition, the EAEU Technical Regulation will help prevent unscrupulous entrepreneurs who sometimes mislead consumers about the energy efficiency of such devices.
The project “Regulatory Framework to Promote Energy Efficiency in Countries of the Eurasian Economic Union” is implemented by UNDP with financial support from the Russian Federation.
