Russian expert supports Moldova in tackling gender-based violence
The Republic of Moldova registers alarming rates of gender-based violence, as one in four women (25%) aged 15 years or older experienced physical or sexual violence from an intimate partner over the last 12 months. In the last five years, 144 women died because of domestic violence perpetrated by their partners, 95% of the victims of violence are women and girls. The most vulnerable categories that are at risk are women living in poverty, those who are not employed and dependent on social benefits. Thus, the economic empowerment of women could be an effective solution to prevent and combat this phenomenon.
To support Moldova in tackling the problem the Russian expert assessed the situation in Gagauzia - a large autonomous region of Moldova. The expert conducted a study on positive and negative factors that influence the expansion of women's economic rights and opportunities. On 11 June 2021 the study was presented to a large audience including the Governor of Gagauzia, Irina Vlah, public officials of Gagauzia and representatives of civil society. During the public dialogue more than 70 participants discussed structural barriers regarding the economic empowerment of women, and proposed solutions and recommendations for improving the situation.
The Russian expert also presented ideas in order to expand the economic opportunities of women, outlining the requirement of efficient implementation of legal mechanisms in this field. Likewise, women should be better informed about gender equality policies, combating violence, and available protection mechanisms, rights, and opportunities. As a result, the participants elaborated a roadmap that would be implemented by regional authorities. The document contains policy recommendations, proposals for changes in legislation, education system, but also concrete measures to empower women in Gagauzia region.
The work of the Russian expert is implemented with the financial support of the Russian Federation within the framework of the project "Knowledge Management and Capacity Building in the UNDP-Russia Partnership".
