Russia Supported Tajikistan in Fighting Coronavirus Infection
In an interview with the Tajik media portal Asia-Plus, published on December 25, the Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Tajikistan, Igor Lyakin-Frolov, described how Russia was the first to come to Tajikistan's aid in fighting the coronavirus:
"Back in February, Russia supported Tajik doctors with the first batch of test systems for detecting COVID-19, which laid the foundation for the laboratory diagnosis of this infection in the Republic. In addition, leading specialists of the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing regularly visited Tajikistan. They have done a tremendous amount of work in providing expert support to Tajik doctors, inspecting "red zones," forming a methodological base, and developing plans for the future."
Igor Lyakin-Frolov also informed the media portal that with the support of the Russia-UNDP Trust Fund a new project has been launched to assist in eliminating the economic consequences of COVID-19 through employment and regional cooperation in rural areas of the Fergana Valley in Tajikistan. The project will promote effective economic recovery, knowledge sharing and the transfer of innovative experiences. Russia allocated $2 million for the project.
The Ambassador also noted the dynamic development of the Russian-Tajik strategic partnership in 2020 in such areas as healthcare, economy and education and spoke about the plans to develop bilateral cooperation in 2021.
